Guided by the Reef Guardian rangers, guests learn about the island’s efforts to protect marine life and preserve its delicate habitats. SCUBA DIVING

Lankayan offers over 30 dive sites within the protected Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area, all within 15 minutes by boat. The reefs slope from shallow coral gardens to depths of around 24 meters and are known for their rich macro life. Nudibranchs, frogfish, ornate ghost pipefish, and ribbon eels are common sightings. Larger residents such as leopard sharks, giant groupers, and schooling fish add to the island’s underwater diversity, with occasional whale shark encounters between March and May.

PADI scuba diving courses are available, while the Discover Scuba Diving program offers non-divers a safe and guided introduction to exploring the underwater world.

SNORKELING

Snorkelers can explore fringing reefs directly from the beach or near the jetty. The shallow waters teem with life: green and hawksbill turtles, juvenile black-tip reef sharks, and schools of bumphead parrotfish are common sightings. With clear visibility and calm seas, Lankayan offers some of Borneo’s best snorkeling right at your doorstep.

KAYAKING

Kayaking along Lankayan’s calm shoreline offers a unique perspective of its marine ecosystem. Paddlers can glide over coral shallows and observe reef fish from above, while enjoying the stillness of the open sea. STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING

Stand-up paddleboarding combines gentle exercise with panoramic views. The stability of the calm sea allows you to observe coral reefs and marine life beneath the surface. It’s a peaceful activity best enjoyed during early mornings or sunsets when the light softens over the lagoon.

BEACH WALKS

A walk around the island reveals how land and sea coexist. Guests often encounter turtle tracks, coral fragments, and the subtle shifts of the shoreline shaped by tide and time. It’s a simple yet meaningful way to understand the island’s living ecosystem up close

TURTLE NESTING & HATCHING

Lankayan is an active nesting site for green and hawksbill turtles. With guidance from Reef Guardian rangers, guests can observe nesting mothers or witness hatchlings making their first journey to the ocean. CENTRE TOUR

The Reef Guardian Centre offers an inside look at Lankayan’s conservation work. The tour introduces guests to coral restoration, turtle hatchery operations, and ongoing research within the marine protected area. Though separate from the island’s conservation activities, they offer a peaceful way to appreciate the surrounding ocean and reflect on the balance that sustains its life and beauty.
